Des Moines, Iowa – The Iowa Legislature expanded health care to an additional 30,000 uninsured kids during the 2009 session with a goal that every Iowa child has quality, affordable health care by 2011.

“In these difficult economic times, I’m proud we are helping middle class families and expanding health care to an additional 30,000 kids,” said State Representative Andrew Wenthe of Hawkeye.

In an effort to reduce costs and improve quality, Senate File 389 was approved to expand coverage to more Iowa kids and help find the population of Iowans who still aren’t receiving the proper healthcare to develop long-term plans to provide access to affordable health care to the uninsured. The bill also addresses Iowa’s looming shortage of health care workers, expands volunteer specialty health care offices, and makes it easier for children up to 25 years old to get health care.

“We also approved legislation that will improve both the quality and affordability of health care in Iowa,” said State Representative Roger Thomas of Elkader.

Other health care measures approved by the Iowa Legislature in 2009 include:

· Adjusted reimbursement rates for psychiatric medical care for children to keep them closer to their families (SF 236)

· Improved safety in nursing homes by increasing nursing home fines for incidents resulting in severe injury or death (Senate File 433)

· Requires insurance companies to cover prosthetic devices (House File 311)

· Requires insurance companies to cover ongoing outpatient diabetes self management training (House File 478)

· Prohibits discrimination by insures among cancer medications whether administered orally, intravenously or by injection (Senate File 478)

· Required insurance companies to pay for institutional mental health services for kids (Senate File 478)

· Expanded Medicaid coverage of service animals (House File 488)

· Created Shaken Baby Prevention Program to protect kids (Senate File 101)

· Established state standards and accreditation for public health agencies (Senate File 389)
